Large Antique Victorian Pine Chest of Drawers In Original Scumble Paint
A handsome example of a c.1870 Victorian pine chest of drawers, retaining its original paintwork in a warm faux-grain finish designed to imitate oak. Pine furniture of this type was typically painted or grained from new during the 19th century, as the timber itself was considered too plain for use as visible furniture. As such, this finish represents a genuine and characterful survival rather than a later addition.
The chest is fitted with two short drawers over three graduated long drawers, each with a moulded edge surround and turned wooden handles in a rich contrasting tone. The drawers are constructed with neatly cut hand-dovetails to both front and back, with solid pine sides and bases showing honest wear and oxidisation consistent with age.
The case stands on turned elm feet and retains its moulded-edge top with a gentle overhang. The whole piece displays a soft, lived-in patina, with scuffs, fading, and surface marks that speak to more than a century of genuine use. It has been carefully cleaned and sympathetically repaired where necessary, and the drawers have been adjusted to ensure smooth operation.
A scarce and authentic survivor, offering fantastic quality, excellent colour, and lovely original condition throughout. Ideal for authentic period interiors.
Dimensions: 119cm tall x 107cm wide x 53cm deep
Condition:
As with all antique and vintage furniture, each piece carries the marks of its age and use, which form part of its character and appeal. Any significant wear or restoration work will be clearly noted in the description.
Where evidence of historic woodworm is present, it will have been fully treated as a precaution. Any splits or repairs are carefully stabilised while preserving the authenticity of the piece, rather than disguising its history.
Every item is thoroughly cleaned and prepared before sale. Drawers are adjusted where necessary to ensure they run as smoothly as possible, and the timber is cleaned, treated and waxed to enhance its appearance and minimise any old furniture odours often associated with antique pieces.
