A beautiful and largely untouched Aesthetic Movement Victorian pine washstand, circa 1880, retaining its original painted and decorated finish throughout.
The piece features a white marble top with a three-sided gallery, the back fitted with original transfer-printed tiles depicting coral and seashells in the characteristically naturalistic Aesthetic taste. Above the tiles, the shaped pediment retains its original painted decoration, fine line work with stylised floral motifs in the manner of the period. The side panels show original faux grain painted decoration, and the single drawer below the marble retains its original brass knobs with painted corner details to the drawer front.
The legs are elegant, reeded and tapered to the front, with turned collars above, typical of the better quality Aesthetic Movement bedroom furniture.
The painted finish has aged beautifully and shows honest wear consistent with its age, but the overall decorative scheme is remarkably intact and the tiles are original and undamaged, increasingly difficult to find on pieces of this type.
A genuinely lovely example of Victorian decorative furniture, ideal for authentic period interiors.
