A beautiful and untouched, Aesthetic Movement painted pine dressing chest, circa 1880, retaining its original decorated finish throughout and bearing the original retailer's trade label of P. Penn & Co, Furnishing Upholsterers, Adrian Street, Dover to the back.
The chest is decorated in a warm faux-grain ground with painted line borders and stylised floral corner motifs in the Aesthetic taste, carried consistently across the drawer fronts, mirror surround, and flanking jewellery drawers. The structure comprises a swing mirror within a shaped painted frame surmounted by a decorative pediment, flanked by two small trinket drawers, each retaining their original pressed brass bail handles. The main chest below has two short over two long graduating drawers, all with original pierced brass drop handles.
Pieces of this type are frequently found stripped or repainted; to have all elements original and in the same decorative scheme throughout is increasingly hard to find.
Retailed by P. Penn & Co of Dover, a detail that roots the piece geographically and adds a layer of provenance not often seen on painted pine bedroom furniture of this period.
