This handsome two-door pine cupboard retains its entirely original paint surface, a beautifully crazed and crackled grey over a deep red layer beneath, the result of nearly two centuries of use. The layers of paint tell their own story. The original shelf labels remain intact inside, hand-written in period ink: Reading Books Assigned, Poetry Books, and Instructional Books, confirming this was a school or institutional bookcase, most likely from a Victorian schoolroom or parish library. It consists of a fully shelved interior, its original door latch and very beautiful wide backboards.
Solid and structurally sound throughout, rustic and authentic in character, honest in its condition, and ready to use in the home exactly as it is.
